Composer’s Club

Writing your own music is one of the most important ways to deepen our understanding of the music around us! Through this club, we will learn techniques and tools to sharpen our skills in this process. One of the goals of the club is to produce at least one piece for submission for a composition contest. Students will produce a professional and original score as well as a recording of their performance for submission by November 1st.

ILMEA Auditions

Every fall, students have the opportunity to audition for the ILMEA (Illinois Music Education Association) District 9 Honor Band. Pursuing this goal can be transformative for young musicians and provides a fantastic challenge for motivated students. The audition date is Saturday, Sept. 28th. The exact time is still TBD, but the auditions will take place sometime between 9-4 at Traughber Junior High School, Oswego. This experience is beneficial beyond words-- the hard work and improvement to prepare the audition alone is outstanding. Should your child be selected, they get to play in a first rate band with other great players from all over dupage co. on Saturday, November 9th at Huntley HS. Please reach out to Mr. Turek for audition materials and preparation help will be offered after school until 3:45 on Thursdays until the audition date. Good Luck!

Solo and Ensemble Festival

Playing in a large ensemble is great, but some of the most profound musical growth comes from working on solo and small ensemble (duet, trio, quartet) repertoire. On February 15th at Thayer J. Hill MS. students will have the chance to perform their work at this contest. Each performance receives feedback from expert judges focused on developing expressive, high-quality performances. Repertoire is selected and passed out in December and January for this event. It requires dedication on the part of the student to be prepared to do their best. If performing a solo, there are additional rehearsals and fees required to reimburse a piano accompanist. The fees are modest for such a great experience; $5 for ensemble members and $9 for a solo entry.
